Documenting our journey as a PYP school within Rocky View Schools

March Update

Exciting times at PWE!! We have completed and submitted our Application for Authorization to the IBO. This was a HUGE undertaking by all members of our staff at Prairie Waters, and I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work, dedication and devotion everyone on staff has shown to making the PYP come to life in our building. Through this process, we have collaboratively created a new mission for our school:

At Prairie Waters, we facilitate every learner’s unique pursuit of understanding through engaging, purposeful, collaborative experiences which empowers each person to positively impact our diverse, ever-changing world.

We have extended our French as a Second Language program to include our grade two and grade three classes, and created a Scope and Sequence for these grades to follow. Prairie Waters Grade 2_3 FSL Scope and Sequence

As a staff, over the course of the past year we have created an assessment policy and a language policy that reflects our commitment to sound assessment practices and inclusive language instruction. Both documents reflect the beliefs and values around assessment practices and language instruction shared by both Rocky View Schools and the IBO.

We are committed to transforming our instructional practices and learning environments in order to enable more inquiry-based learning to occur. We have a school-wide Programme of Inquiry that is prominently displayed in our building, so all school community members are aware of the concepts that each of the grades are exploring.

As we move forward this year, we are beginning to investigate the Exhibition that will happen in grade five. Already, our grade five team has traveled to Millarville Community School to see the preparations for the Exhibition in action and when we return from break, we will begin to build a vision of what it could look like at Prairie Waters. We are also exploring various options for digital portfolios for our students, and over the final 3 months of the school year, we will engage in staff conversations to agree upon a platform we think will best be able to capture our students’ progress through their PYP journey. Currently, we have a class using RVS’ Creative Blogs site, another is using a Google Sites format, and another is using Google Docs. We will look at the pros and cons of each platform and then delve into the format that we choose by engaging in Professional Learning about how to best use a digital portfolio within that platform. 21st Century Learning Specialists, be on the lookout for us contacting you in the near future!

Exciting times at PWE indeed! As we head into our Spring Break, I wish you all a well-deserved break! I know everyone here at PWE has certainly earned it!
