Documenting our journey as a PYP school within Rocky View Schools

February Happenings ~ The Exhibition is almost here!

As the year motors along, we are moving into another first here at Prairie Waters! Part of the PYP journey that our students are on, is the Exhibition, which occurs in the students’ final year of the programme. The PYP Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and its students. It provides our students with the opportunity to synthesize the essential elements of the PYP and share them with the greater school community. As a culminating experience, it is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile that have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP. It inspires them to take action in a meaningful, purposeful and relevant way.

This will be the first opportunity our grade 5’s have had to participate in an Exhibition ~ since we are now an officially accredited IB world school, it is now a requirement that we participate in the Exhibition. 3 of our grade 5 teachers attended the Exhibition workshop in October, and Ryan and I just returned from the Exhibition workshop in Vancouver last weekend. We spent the morning today collaborating with the grade 5 teachers to generate a plan and share ideas for what our Exhibition could look like. It was a very productive morning! We now have a general outline of the 6 week unit and a better understanding of what we need to do in order to prepare our students to be successful in their group inquiries. Our Exhibition Unit of Inquiry will begin on March 31 and finish in the middle of May.

A critical aspect of the Exhibition is to provide students with as many opportunities to collaborate, with as many different people as possible. One person that becomes an important resource for the students to access is the mentor. The main role of the mentor is to advise and keep students on track throughout their inquiry. As the Exhibition approaches, we are looking to find people who would be willing to volunteer some of their time to mentor groups of students through their exhibition inquiry. Since we have such a high number of grade 5 students at Prairie Waters this year, we will need a high number of mentors to provide support to our groups. We would love to invite any of you who would be able to dedicate approximately 1 hour per week to work with our students to join us in this exciting process. Please email me ( if you would like to help out!

We would also like to officially invite you to attend our parent and community Exhibition Showcase, which will be held on Wednesday May 21 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. We hope to see many of you there to help us in celebrating this exciting accomplishment for our grade 5 students as they graduate from the Primary Years Programme. Be on the lookout for a formal invitation closer to the date!
